CHAPTER FIFTEEN

The evil was eating Carla alive.

She wanted revenge, of course, and she didn’t pity the Ignacio swine she’d slaughtered.

But her soul was getting damaged.

From the very beginning of training, when she was still just a girl, Dario had stressed the value of violence, but he’d also taught her the importance of abstaining from violence. It bore spiritual ramifications, he’d assured her, which was one of many reasons to use it sparingly.

Blood. Slashed throats. Screams for mercy.

All of it swirled through Carla’s mind.

Not only that, but it felt like her very existence had taken a turn into spiritual decay. She now lived in a world full of alleys and cracked concrete and seedy bars and ruined parts of an otherwise beautiful city.

Her current location was no exception. The parking lot was vast and empty, with cracked, crumbling pavement overgrown with tall grasses and weeds. Dozens of half-dead trees surrounded this barren space, a mixture of palm and oak. The air was still and quiet, the only sounds the rustling of leaves in the wind and the occasional scurrying of small animals through the undergrowth.

It was an awful place, and Carla wanted to leave. But she would have to endure more places like this until the mission was complete.

Only two more kills remaining.

Leo and Alex.

Then it would be over.

Fortunately, it was almost time for the first of those two kills. That was, if Mr. Hamelin would ever show up to give her a ride.

He was late.

She took the cellular phone from her pocket, considered calling him—

And right on cue, the Lumina crunched into the parking lot. Dull black paint. White fender.

And Mr. Hamelin’s silhouette behind the wheel.

The Lumina came to a halt. As per their protocol, Carla should have gone to the passenger side and gotten in. But she didn’t this time. The name played through her mind, the thoughts she’d been having about it.

Hamelin…

She approached the driver’s side. The window retracted, and Mr. Hamelin gave her a confused smile.

“What are you doing, Carla? This isn’t part of the Master Plan,” he said and held up his small, leather-bound notebook—his so-called Master plan. There was a slight pause as he studied her attire, then deeper confusion in his grin. “And why the hell are you dressed like that?”

She wore a cloak she’d snatched from a shipping box outside a costume shop in South Beach. This had been last week. She’d stowed it away for later use in Little Havana. It was made for someone much larger than Carla—which worked perfectly for her purposes.

With his face turned, the muscles in Mr. Hamelin’s strong neck flexed. He had a perfectly shaved head, dark eyebrows, and piercing blue eyes, which were sharp and cunning. His face was angular, with a prominent jawline that gave him an air of resoluteness and strength, but there was a constant sense of nervous energy that always threatened to negate this quality.

She evaluated him, perhaps for the first time in earnest. Something about that smile didn’t sit well with her.
